For book clubs reading Bouncing Back, here are some questions to start your conversation. Email me with any further ideas for topics to discuss!

  • What were your attitudes toward divorce before you read Bouncing Back? How did your thinking shift as you were reading the book?

  • What were your preconceptions about how therapists think? What did you discover about how the therapist “Ellen” approaches treating her patients? Were you surprised by any of her thoughts or suggestions?

  • The character Meghan divorces a man who is a “good guy.” It was a struggle for her to admit that is what she wanted to do. What did you think about her decision to divorce and why it was so hard for her?

  • Do you think that women’s fears about being alone push them into a marriage too quickly?

  • Some of the female characters in this book lacked self-confidence. Can you identify with this problem? Do you think that women struggle with a lack of self-confidence more than men do?

  • People change during the course of their lifetime. The person you are in your 20s may not be the person you are thirty years later. What challenges does this pose for marriage?

  • The female characters in this book have a certain way of thinking about marriage. Do you gender plays an important role in people’s hopes and expectations for their marriages?
